Fort Hays State University is seeking a dynamic, student-centered Professional Academic Advisor to join the Department of Global Affairs and International Student Services (GAISS). This full-time, 12-month position is more than just academic advising—it is a key role in a globally engaged, mission-driven team that supports student success across cultural boundaries.
The Advisor will support International Partnership (IP) students who are completing FHSU degrees through cross-border programs, IP pathway students who transition to study on the Hays campus, and as needed non-degree-seeking students enrolled for personal or professional enrichment. This role plays a critical part in our team’s purpose: to foster international partnerships, support international students, and lead global learning initiatives to enhance FHSU’s international impact and community.
This position reports to the Director of Global Affairs.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree or four years of experience in lieu of degree
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree or six years of experience in lieu of a degree
Experience working with international students, advising, or cross-cultural education
Key Responsibilities:
Student Advising
Provide academic advising to IP cross-border and pathway students, with attention to degree requirements, immigration-related enrollment policies, and overall academic success.
Support students in making informed decisions regarding their academic journey, including course selection, academic goal setting, and timely degree completion.
Assist students in navigating FHSU systems and connecting with academic and campus resources to promote student well-being and engagement.
Maintain accurate advising records in student systems and advisor notes through maximizing digital platforms and tools.
Respond proactively to EAB Navigate Alerts and collaborate with faculty/staff to intervene when students face academic challenges.
As needed, advise non-degree-seeking and non-certificate-seeking students on educational options and institutional policies.
Team Collaboration and Student Success
Actively contribute to the GAISS team’s advising model and international student success initiatives.
Collaborate across departments such as Registrar, Academic Affairs, college dean’s offices, FHSU Online, and Career Services.
Coordinate with the advising counterpart at the partner schools and maintain strong partner relations.
Participate in recruitment and orientation activities for international students.
Uphold the values of integrity, adaptability, cross-cultural understanding, and inclusion in all interactions.
Support a culture of shared purpose, student advocacy, continuous improvement, and global engagement.
Professional Development and Innovation
Engage in professional development activities related to advising, international education, and necessary platforms.
Participate in departmental planning and contribute to the development of a centralized, sustainable advising model for IP students.

Salary:
Bachelor’s degree: $36,000 per year
Master’s degree or higher: $39,000 per year
